Abstract

People use guava leaves as traditional medicine. The guava leaves consist of some compounds such as tannin, flavonoid, and volatile oil which have antibacterial effect. People use the leaves in many forms, such as eaten-fresh, infusion, andextracts. This research studies the antibacterial activity of guava leaf in the form of infusion on the growth of Salmonellatyphi. This laboratory experimental research was complete-randomized design. The infusions were divided into fourconcentrations: 20 g/100 ml, 10 g/100 ml, 5 g/100 ml, and 2.5 g/100 ml. Positive control was chloramphenicol, andnegative control was aquadest. By using diffusion methods, the result showed that averages clear zone diameters fromthe highest concentration were 14.3 mm, 11.6 mm, 9.6 mm, and 7.6 mm. Average clear zone of chloramphenicol was30 mm and aquadest was 6 mm. As conclusion, the concentration of infusion which showed the biggest antibacterialeffect in this research was 20 g/100ml.
